RINGSTEAD BAY
WIND SSW
OS NGR: SY 75815 82396
OVERVIEW:
A National Trust owned property at Ringstead, near Weymouth.
Public Site
ALL NT rules apply (no power of any description).
The ideal wind diection for this slope is SSW. However, it will tolerate a few degrees either side but not past SW when the clean lift will be obstructed by the Isle of Portland.
Watch the anchored ships in the bay for a good wind direction indicator. Stronger SW means lots of bumpy lift.
OTHER FLYING:
An agreement has been reached with the local parascender's to avoid confliction. They use the eastward half of the slope and RC gliders use the westward half. If flyers stand near the lip next to the hollow they can be seen, which helps the paracender's positively identify us. This only applies in lighter winds. As the wind gets stronger the parascender's will disappear and fly elsewhere. Hang gliders will pass overhead behind you when they are landing in the field behind the car parking area. They are not usually a problem as most will fly off to White Nothe to gain height before departing for Portland. Visiting parascender's may need reminding of the agreement.
MODEL TYPES:
Good for all types of gliders unless the winds gets too bumpy, then it's really good for 'foamies'. Used by many locals and clubs. No facilities.
